With the Municipal Theatre, the first theatre was built after the Second World War and opened in Münster on the 4th of February 1956. The architecture of the modern theatre building was celebrated as a 'bold thunderclap'. The theatre, built in 1895, in close proximity to the noble mansion Romberger Hof, was completely destroyed during the Second World War in 1941.
The team of architects Deilmann, Hausen, Rave and Ruhnau created the design of the new
Münster theatre, which was greeted with worldwide interest.

The ruins of the Romberger Hof was integrated into the theatre's new building and shaped into a natural theatre backdrop. Great actors such as Ruth Leuwerik, among others, started their career in the Münster theatre. The Municipal Theatre offer apart from plays also dance as well as children and youth theatre.
