Rhine crossing of the Allied Forces
In Mehrum the Allied Forces crossed the Rhine on the 23rd to the 24th of March 1945. The pioneers of the 9th US army crossed the Rhine initially with amphibious tanks. Subsequently 2 pontoon bridges and a new road up to the dike were built. The "Amiweg", this is how the road was named by the people, was connected with the Allestrasse, today named Schlossstrassese, after the dike was opened.

The memorial was erected by the village community of Mehrum in 2005.

This crevasse is pictured at the memorial in memorandum of the Rhine crossing.

Castle Mehrum
The memorial was erected on the former Rosenberg of the castle Mehrum. Only the coat of arms stone could be rescued from the castle Mehrum, which originally hung above the main entrance. (featuring at the right on the photo).

Initially the castle was used by the labour services and thereafter as an accommodation for the prisoners of war. During the Rhine crossing of the Allied Forces in 1945 it was almost completely destroyed.

The oak tree of peace of Mehrum
The oak tree of peace of Mehrum stands at the "Rynumsche Weg", which originally connected Mehrum with the village of Rynum. This village disappeared into the Rhine in 1668. The village community of Mehrum planted the oak tree of peace with the cooperation of the men's choir Germania in memorandum of the end of the war in 1870-71.
Due to a flash of lightning hit the oak tree lost a few branches a few years ago.
