Internationale Bauakademie Berlin - Schaufassade
Schaufassade Bauakademie
Schinkelplatz 1
10117 Berlin
The Builder Academy of the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the outstanding German architect of the 19th-century is to come back to Berlin's historical centre, to the Schinkelplatz between Friedrichswerderscher Church and Schlossplatz.
In addition, the Internationale Bauakademie Berlin was founded to contribute to architecture research and architecture mediation in Berlin. Members are international renowned architects, as for example, architect Prof. Hans Kollhoff (President), as well as Berlin's public architecture and art collections. The Builder Academy is to become a public forum for lively and critical discussions with questions about architecture and construction, city planning and urbanism; a new institution at the historical place of the Builder Academy by Schinkel.
The Schinkel Building Academy, built from 1832 to 1835 in close proximity to the Stadtschloss, to the most important museums and the Forum Fridericianum, was in its time a revolutionary building of austere clarity.
Destroyed in the 2nd World War, partly reconstructed in the 1950s, the building was then pulled down in 1962, by the GDR government, to generate space for the Foreign Office. The building was then, in turn cleared in 1995, by the German government. The show facade of the Builder Academy was completed in 2004, an expensive scaffold construction with printed covers with the original measurements. It shows impressively how the building once looked. The 'Show Facade' – brick-red textile tarpaulins, images of the Schinkel Building Academy are printed on, fastened at the scaffold construction – is to inform the public about the imminent rebuilding. Also sponsors are being sought for the rebuilding. The measures of the "show facade" illustrate the town planning presence of the building academy; rebuilding costs are estimated at 20 to 25 million Euros.
One part of the facade was bricked up with solid bricks as 'model facade' and integrated into the 'show facade'. The model facade was completed in autumn 2001 by apprentices of the Bildungsverein Bautechnik, the club for qualification in traditional and modern constructional engineering and made available to the Senate of Berlin.
Inside, the scaffold construction, a model room was realised, which offers space for exhibitions and events. The facade facing towards the Schinkelplatz has an integrated screen, financed by sponsors, where every evening projections about architectural themes or just children's films or cinema movies are being presented.
