Alter Markt, 28832 Achim

At the western end of the pedestrian zone one reaches the Granary Scherf. In 1987 the building was rebuilt exactly as it was as the previous building was beyond repair. For many years fertiliser, seeds and fuel were stored in the old granary. Since the second half of the 18th-century up to the 19th-century the old marketplace was the location of the traditional cattle market with the most diverse animal species on offer. At the same time a rummage market took place at the Obernstraße, the Bahnhofstraße and the Borsteler Landstraße. 80 to 100 stands, roundabouts and shooting galleries made the markets attractive also for the Bremen population. Today a circus with the sculpture 'Animus-Anima', designed by Wolf E. Schulz, symbol of humanity forms the the centre of the old marketplace.
