Geese at the Lower Rhine

Every year during the winter months a nature spectacle repeats itself: approximately. 170.000 migrating birds, (up to 150.000 white fronted geese and 15.000 bean geese) migrate in huge swarms from their summer retreat in Siberia to the meadow landscapes in oder to survive the winter period. The surrounding of Bislich, the island of Bislich, the old Rhine meadow near Rees-Bienen and the Düffelt near Kranenburg are the preferred resting places of the birds.

The birds graze in the open river estuaries in flocks of a few dozen up to many thousands. White fronted geese prefer grazing land, bean geese search on arable land for harvest leftovers. The geese remain at the Lower Rhine until end February depending on the weather condition. There are bus excursions to the over-wintering places on offer in order to provide visitors an environmentally friendly possibility observing the wild geese.
