After the founding of the 2nd German Empire, William I, German Emperor, transferred the Saxon-forest to Otto Fürst von Bismarck Chancellor of the Germany. He lived here in Friedrichsruh from 1890 to his death in 1898.
The Bismarck-Museum is situated in Friedrichsruh. It has a collection from the time of the 'Iron Chancellor'.

Near the museum one can view the
Bismarck-Mausoleum.
The earl as well as his wife, countess Johanna, were laid to rest there.

The old train station is now the headquarter of the
Otto-von-Bismarck-Foundation.
A permanent exhibition can be found here, a library as well as a large archive.
In addition the foundation organises lectures and seminars regularly.
The Butterfly Garden opens always at the beginning of spring and is open daily from 9am to 6pm.
