The 'market town' Gittelde is part of the joint community Bad Grund since 1972 and is situated at the west Harz edge Osterode and Seesen. In June 2004 Gittelde counted 2.095 citizens. Gittelde was first mentioned in the year 953. The emblem was presented at the one-thousand-year celebrations.
The Gittelder Johannis church stands on the ground of the former castle - probably a branch of the royal residence Pöhlde.
Do you know the Ernst-August-pit-tunnel? It was built between 1851 and 1984 and runs from the mouth in Gittelde to the Schreibfeder mine shaft in the pit Regenbogen near Zellerfeld.
