Bicycle route - to castles and mills

The cycle tour runs along the Niers river to the castle ruin Wachtendonk. You start in Oedt at the castle ruin Uda (photo left). The castle was built around 1300, housed the Amtshaus (council office) of Oedt and was used as protection for the archdiocese Cologne. At the end of the 18-century invading troops blew up the fortification. the castle tower was renovated only a short time ago.
Along the Niers cycling tour path we cycle past Niers river and the airfield terrain Niershorst. Here you are able to watch gliders and sport airplanes as well as parachute jumpers in the air. The route runs on the Niers cycling tour path into the nature reserve Grasheide and Mülhausener Benden. Amidst the pasture landscape is the Langendonker Mill situated. This oil and grain mill from the 14th-century ground in-between once tobacco leaves. The route runs past the abbey Mariendonk and the Neersdommer Mill. The Benedictine monastery stems from the year 1900. At the Neersdommer Mill cyclists can get information about the Kempener Border Stone Path.
The route runs further on underneath the motorway 40 near Schlick on the Niers-cycle tour path, past the Roeselshof direction Wachtendonk. Shortly before Wachtendonk turn left over the Niers and then to the castle ruin Wachtendonk. The former moated Wachtendonk castle was first mentioned in 1326. Cyclists will pass the historic village centre of Wachtendonk with town hall,magazine, city wall, Püllen House and several other listed buildings.
The path follows the Lower Rhine Route via the Moorenstraße along the Schleck beck. then the route takes you left in the direction of Gelinter. The Velde House from the 13th-century can be reached via the Kempener Boeder Stone Path. The feudal estate was used as border security in the past and is now privately owned. The route follows the Kempener Border Stone through expansive fields of the 'Kempener Platte' and past Steinfunder House. Via the BahnRadweg district Viersen, along the former railway line Grefrath-Kempen, cyclists reach, after 36 kilometres the tour's starting point Uda castle.
