The bicycle tour leads to shutdown mills along Nette and Niers.
Start is at the old town hall in Lobberich, Marktstraße. First cyclists cycle through the village along the Hochstraße and past Sankt Sebastian. They reach on the Lower Rhine route the Nettebruch Lake. The route runs past the lake and the Nelsen-Mill. The former watermill at the Nette grinded flour and produced oil in the past. Today the building with arched windows is a residence.
Along the Nettetaler circular path cyclists will pass the Breyeller Lake. The path runs north along the Windmühlenbruch and the former Neu-Mill. This Nette-Mill milled grain. It was still in operation until a few years ago. Right now the owners turning the mill into a residence. The route runs along the Ferkensbruch. A detour leads to the Lüthe-Mill (photo above). Today it's a restaurant and inn. The former grain and oil mill was first mentioned in the 15th-century.
The route runs on the 2-country-route in the direction of Sassenfeld. Cyclists pass by the Nabu-Naturschutzhof and reach Hombergen as well as the Krickenbecker Lakes. At Schloss Krickenbeck castle runs a path on the Lower Rhine Route No 99 via Plankenheide to the Alten Nordkanal. Napoleon once planned the trading route, which was never finished. Following the path of the Nordkanal the route takes you to the Floots-Mill. The history of this former grain and oil mill goes back to the 16th-century. Today it is used as a residence. The memorial cross in the front garden is used by Kevelaer-pilgrims as resting place.
The path runs through the Nette-Lowlands. Short detours will bring you to the Kover-Mill and the Nette-Mill. Both mills situated at the border of the district Kleve to the district Viersen are used as residences today. The Kover-Mill from the 14th-century was in use until 1945. Further on through the Vorster Heath. The Vorster Mill stood here in the past. Cyclists will reach the former location of the grain mill via a detour on the Vorster Mill-Path.
The path leads to the Neersdommer Mill, situated at the river Niers near the abbey Mariendonk in Grefrath. The mill from the 14th-century worked with four grinders around the clock. In 1942 the operation ceased. Along the Niers-Lowlands the path runs on the Lower Rhine Route past the Langendonker Mill. The former grain and oil mill milled tobacco leaves for a long time.
Cyclists will pass along the route the Lower Rhenish open-air museum of the district Viersen. This Museum of Folk Culture depicts the Lower Rhenish life of bygone times. A stop is well worth it. Through the village centre of Grefrath and via a new section of the BahnRadweg district Viersen from Grefrath to Kaldenkirchen cyclists reach after 36 kilometres the Old Town Hall in Lobberich again.
