...the treasure
In the south-west of the Hörsteler's urban area is the charming quarter Bevergern situated. Splendid farming estates, cosy cobblestone and lots of dreamy corners give distinction to the village centre. Since the early 12th-century already can the name Bevergern be found in the history books. The village received its town charter in 1366. The castle, built around 1100 and destroyed in the late 17th-century dominated the village for a long time. Unfortunately, nothing remained. Only the exhibited model at the Bevergerner Heimathaus as well as on a painting in the parish church lets us guess how immensely important the medieval castle was then.
But even without the castle, Bevergern offers apart from the historical townscape a diverse number of well worth seeing attractions. On the one hand the late Gothic catholic parish church St. Marien with beautiful carvings from the 16th to 18th century as well as two important sculptures of Mary from the 15th-century. Do visit also the little local museum in Goldorf, a picturesque group of three, tightly joint against each other, half-timbered houses from the 18th-century. It is devoted to local history, culture and the working world.
The Bevergerner Heimathaus located next to the church with a substantial collection from history, tradition and craft is well worth a visit.
If you prefer sporty activities, we recommend a visit to the Torfmoor Lake between Bevergen and Hörstel. A nature trail and a geological trail convey insights into the local fauna and the earth's evolutionary history. The fitness trail and the circular hiking path are a popular route for those who want to stay fit. A special swimming lake promises also an enjoyable time for smaller children. The lake is ideal for swimming or just splashing about. The Tormoor Lake is also ideal for windsurfing.
'Gold' is of special importance for Bevergern. In 1991 the Hörsteler quarter was awarded the gold medal at the national competition 'Best kept village'. And justly so as you can see for yourself when you stroll through the village.
