Twistesee

After a flood in the year 1965 caused damage of several millions in the area of Twiste, Diemel and Weser a flood detention basin was build among other things in the course of the water regulation measures.  

It started with the building of the Twistetalsperre (dam) in 1972 in regards to leisure and recreation values. The dam was completed beginning of  1979 and has a dam area of 121ha with a maximal water capacity of 9,1 mil. m³.

Free of any kind of sewage discharge this is one of Germany's cleanest lakes with excellent water quality.

Around the lake lovely running and hiking paths were developed in the wooded areas. Available to the nature seeking runner far away from the tourist metropolises is a track with joint friendly surface of spruce needles and sawdust as well as a well signposted path net and the classic marathon course.  

International events like the short triathlon, endurance sports week everybody-triathlon or the Advent's marathon take place annually.  

A true enrichment for family holidays is the Strandbad with North Sea sand and play options for children as well as the seven kilometre long car-free path around the lake.
