Town Bergen

The town of Bergen and the surrounding villages Becklingen, Belsen, Bleckmar, Diesten, Dohnsen, Eversen, Hagen, Hassel, Nindorf, Offen, Sülze and Waldböhmen have population of around 17000.
Of those are roughly 3000 British citizens, either soldiers or their family members.

This long-standing cohabitation of different nationalities in Bergen created the town's motto:

The place Bergen is mostly known in connection with the memorial and the exhibition area Bergen-Belsen.

Coming from the motorway A7 it is well-signposted and the destination for people interested in history and of course school classes.

In 2007 a new documentation centre was opened here. It informs with the most advanced technique and different media.

A museum of a special kind and jewel is the local museum Römstedthaus in the village centre.
It was founded in 1913 by the then preceptor Friedrich Römstedt and depicts the farming live bygone days with the respective equipment.
A tithe barn from the year 1660, where early history finds from the area Bergen are exhibited and an outdoor herb garden complete the picture.
