The church was completed in its present form in 1420.

But there has been a church building already at this place since 1233. The medieval building fabric of the two-nave asymmetrical long-house with choir has been preserved.

Two splendid candelabras from 1727 decorate the otherwise kept simple church.

The church's design was changed to classicism around 1880; today's belfry constructed in its present form in 1897.

The church interior was completely changed in 1959. The galleries and the altar with 'God's eye' was removed, the nave painted white, new coloured-glass windows by the Hamburg artist Wallner put in as well as a bronze altar picture new organ setup.

The church was restored again for the  750-year celebration of St.-Mary's church in 1983.

The long-due restoration of the Ott-organ from the year 1960 finally happened in the year 2005. 'High-Tech' materials of the 60ties like resin glues and thin metal sheets at the organ-pipes didn't last and buckled down.

The tower redevelopment finished after 2 years at the end of  2005. In autumn 2005 the southern church courtyard was lowered and newly designed so that visitors are now able to enter the church without any problem.
