The village Otersen with its 500 citizens is characterised by the Aller river, the 7 lakes and listed farmsteads with several well preserved half-timbered buildings and 34 architectural monuments on 15 farms. The Aller marsh, the Geest and large wooded areas form an over 14 sqkm large district.

Otersen is well known beyond its borders through the great spring festival, the solar-Aller-ferry Otersen-Westen and the village shop. Germany's second smallest ferry was awarded with the German Solar Prize in 1999. Since 1997 the ferry has transported over 60.000 passengers safe and environmentally friendly over the Aller river. The Aller ferry is powered 'with the power of the sun and honourably post' by over 60 voluntary ferrymen. Good infrastructure and living quality is being guaranteed by the kindergarten, the sports room in the village house 'Alte Schule"', the village shop 'from citizens to citizens', the village square with servants' house, fitness room, youth room, basketball-pitch and football pitch as well as an active club life with by now over 700 club members and the Niedersachsenhof Otersen.

In 2004 Otersen celebrated the village jubilee '950 years Otersen' and started the project 'Trees of the good occasions' with the planting of the jubilee oak so that Otersen also has many trees for future generations in villagescape. In 2005 Otersen started together with 3.924 other villages the nationwide village competition 'Our village has a future'. Otersen qualified as Lower Saxon state winner for the 22. nationwide competition and was awarded with 'gold' and the title 'state gold village' in 2007.

Interesting is the Homepage http://www.otersen.de with many further information about Otersen, which is taken care of by the Otersen's clubs since 1998.
