The Zeiss Planetarium Bochum was set up in the year 1964 and has been since then one of the most modern facilities of its kind worldwide. Under the cupola with a diameter of 20 metres, there is space for around 260 persons. A central projector throws a picture of the starry night, thus creating a realistic sky impression for the visitors. Around the projection hall, is a circular path, where permanent and changing exhibitions are taking place.

On the 4th of May 2010, the planetarium was reopened after a conversion phase of four months. It is the first worldwide planetarium with Velvet-FullDome-Projection. For the first time, the music was composed especially (SOUNTH, Tim Heinrich) and in parts even recorded with the Movie Orchestra Babelsberg.

Until now, it is the only planetarium, which developed five new shows for the reopening.

Apart from the normal astronomical demonstrations, there are also special events as well as special music shows on offer.

The Freundeskreis Planetarium Bochum supports the work of the planetarium financially. It is an association, which offers apart from normal memberships also star sponsorships.
