The Volksbühne was founded in 1914, at the Bülowplatz (today Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz), the centre of the former Scheunenviertel. Built by the architect Oscar Kaufmann, financed by penny contributions from the members of the Volksbühnen club, voluntary donations and the purchasing of so-called 'Baumarken' (building coupons). The goal of the workers-visitor-organisation was to propagate realistic-contemporary stagecraft and provide the proletarians theatee visits with reduced tickets.

Intendants were, among others Max Reinhardt, Friedrich Kayssler, Karl-Heinz Martin and Heinz Hilpert. Outstanding stage director of the 1920ties was Erwin Piscator.

The theatre under the directorship of Frank Castorf sees itself as a place of political thinking, the controversy and innovation.
