A systematic processing of the culture-historical development of Ibbenbüren has been done by different clubs and individual persons until now. In August 2007, the 'Förderverein Stadtmuseum e. V.' was founded. The association is devoted to the research of Ibbenbüren's history through the development of a collection with suitable exhibits and the presentation to the public.
The extensive and long-term tasks are being tackled by a circle of engaged citizens. With the help of the town, which gave the building to the club for usage without any charges and made an amount of money available for the maintenance, the first important basis for the museum was made possible. Many of the town's workshop worked free-of-charge at the reconstruction and the design of the rooms.

In March 2008 already, the first exhibition 'Old postcards from the town of Ibbenbüren' could be opened. Apart from the lender of the exhibits, many sponsors also contributed. The historical flair of the rooms forms a pretty frame for the presentation of the small jewels, which allow the viewer time travel into the past. The former appearance of streets and buildings becomes alive again, many forgotten details document the change of the cityscape.
