The Schwerin cathedral is apart from the Lübeck cathedral and the Ratzeburg cathedral, one of the most important buildings of the brick romanticism.

In the year 1171, the foundation took place in the presence of the Earl of Schwerin, the Duke of Schwerin, the bishops Evermod and Berno as well as Henry the Lion. after 76 years of construction, the old cathedral was consecrated in 1248. Only the door south portal (the paradise gate) at the southwestern side has survived the times.

In 1270 already, the new construction began on the highest point of the old town, where a parish church stood before. After 146 years, the medieval building history of the high-Gothic basilica of the cathedral of Schwerin ended.

But, its present tower received the cathedral in the 1889/93, constructed in neo-Gothic style. With 117,5m it is the highest church tower in Eastern Germany.
