The Roemer

The gatehouse 'Römer' – a building so diverse as interesting like the history of Lengerich. The building's, name interpretation lies in the history's dark, serves as a gate to the churchyard since the 13th-century. At the beginning of the 18th-century, it was also used for residential purposes through the addition of another storey. In 1850 Amt Lengerich purchased the Römer. It became town hall, prison and fire brigade equipment shelter. From 1897 onwards, after the construction of the new town hall, the Römer stood empty. In 1905 it housed a classroom of the tradition-steeped Amtsrektorat school, the municipal archive and on the ground floor small shops.
Today, it is a restaurant and beer bar fashionable. The upper storey is also being used for marriages.
