The Museum for Völkerkunde (Ethnology) of the Christian-Albrechts-University was founded in 1884. It is situated at the building of the Zoological Museum and shows these days exclusively the exhibits of the South Sea section. The remaining pieces of the collection have been relocated to the State Museum in Schleswig. Some of the artworks have been crafted from stone and shell slices. Especially impressive are the exhibited skull masks from Neubritannien and the male mummy from the Atacama Desert. Contributed to the collection have many former Kieler representatives of the merchant and imperial marine, surgeons, world and research traveller.
