The Incident
At the Rathausplatz, is the fountain' Der Zwischenfall' (the incident) situated. It was created by Gerd Ruwe in 1992. Visitors always stop at this sculpture.
The artist from Osnabrück, calls the sculpture 'Incident', which unfolds like a fan with a lot of dynamic towards the heads of the figures. The onlooker is amused and happy, not be entangled into the incident himself. This original fountain was constructed on a historical place. During development work, an old stonewalled well shaft was rediscovered at this place. The presumption is that it might be the Margareten fountain. Its water is said to have had healing effects and was visited by pilgrims during Lengerich's pilgrimage period in the 14th and 15th-century. The fountain was filled up after two people drowned in it and after more than 200 years rediscovered.
Today, lots of children play in the fountain's flat water basin on hot summer days.
