Start your hike at the little car park with the bench, situated at the road 'An der Rodelbahn'.

You reach this place when you walk along the 'Lindenallee' or - drive into the direction forest, take the extension  'Faßenberg' and then turn left into the gravel path 'An der Rodelbahn'. From here follow the signs made of oak spikes with an engraved mushroom and a number.

Station 2

Over-exploitation in the forest in the Middle Ages lead to large deforestation areas, the soil is depleted, pure sand lies on the surface. Different heath species developed little by little. Winds and storms whipped the sand through the air. Travellers reported of a 'terrible desert', which they had to cross. Only the pine tree was able to cope and prosper with the, for trees, wasteful condition. The pine tree still dominates the picture of our forests today.

Station 3

Deadwood – full of life! Once the tree has died the work of numerous animal species start their work. They'll turn the former proud tree into its smallest components (minerals). Dead trees offer living space! Woodpeckers search for larva of wood breeding insects or hammer themselves, like here into a birch, a hollow as a breeding tree. After that, Eurasian wrynecks, pied flycatcher, stock doves, Tengmalm's owls or bat love to move in for a time. Millions of insect larva, fungus and micro-organisms turn the tree to a valuable forest soil in the space of 20-30 years, thus closing the circle of existing and decaying.
