The old, built by field stones, collegiate church became so dilapidated at the end of the 19th century that it was decided in 1887 to remove the walls and to construct a new building which was inaugurated in the year 1889.

According to a legend the Bishop Ansgar sought shelter from the approaching Vikings in the nowadays Ramelsloh. The land, which a lady named Ikia donated to the church, should have been the location of a monastery which was founded in 845. The first documented mentioning took place in the year 937. 12 Cathedral canons formed the foundation including a sextor, cantor and commercial manager. In 1529 the reformation also moved into Ramelsloh and in 1540 the relationship between the foundation and the landlord was regulated. In 1863 the assets of the foundation were transferred to the general monastery fond of Hanover, which today still funds as the monastery chamber the costs for the maintenance of the church and its inventory.
