Picnic Places in Kiel and surrounding area


The sun is shining and individual fleecy clouds drift past the stark blue sky: Perfect conditions for a picnic in the park with the family, friends or just the two of you. Load the car or bicycle with red wine, cheese, grapes and baguette as well as blankets and off we go - to Kiel's and Schleswig-Holstein's loveliest picnic places.

Old Botanical Garden
Immediately next to the Kunsthalle and the Institute for Oceanography is the Old Botanical Garden situated. Its special charm is constituted by the diversity of trees, bushes, shrubs, bulbous plants and tubers and the for North Germany unusual strong hilly landscape. On its highest place is the Garden Pavilion with its artistically forged crown situated. One has a wonderful view onto the Kiel Fjord from the accessible platform at the roof.

Diederichsen-Park
The Diederichsen-Park is since 1958 a public park. One has a lovely view onto the Kiel Fjord together with its ferries from Scandinavia, the Outer-Fjord and the Möltenorter lighthouse. The foundation wall of the Villa Forsteck can be found in the middle of the park. On hot summer days just saunter down to the beach and take a refreshing dip in the floods.

Picnic like in the olden days
The Tourist information Kiel organises culinary trips to the open-air museum Molfsee under the motto "Picnic like at great-grandmother's times"! The lovingly prepared picnic basket will surprise you with delicious delicacies. This way one can enjoy the pleasant charm of bygone days. The price of 18,- Euro includes admission to the museum as well as food and beverages (incl. usage of picnic basket, cutlery and tableware). Children from 7 to 17 years pay 9,- Euro and for children up to 7 years admission is free! The offer can be booked from minimum 2 persons.

Einfelder Lake
The lovely swimming lake in Neumünster is very inviting with its sunbathing lawns and the beach for picnics and barbequing on hot summer days. A swim in the lake brings some cooling. A special eye-catcher is the stone artworks of the international sculptor symposium from 1989.
Direction: Take the B 4 from Kiel in direction Neumünster. On the right hand side behind the village sign of Neumünster is the car-park for the lake.

Rencks Park
Rencks Park is situated near the big main road "Großflecken" in the centre of Neumünster. Surprising is the radiating calmness of the park despite its central location. Everyday hassle is forgotten fast when you enjoy a picnic underneath the trees at the Schwale, a small dammed river, where quacking ducks complete the peaceful picture.

Direction: Drive along the A 7 to one of the exits Neumünster. Upon reaching the city centre follow the signposting "Stadthalle". Rencks Park lies north of the Stadthalle.

Großkönigsförde
The view onto the North Sea-Baltic-Canal and the expanding hilly landscape will turn your picnic into an unforgettable experience. The stretch along the canal invites short bicycle tours. Angler can enjoy themselves here and the prepared BBQ and picnic places have seen some great summer festivities.

Direction: Take the A 210 from Kiel to Rendsburg, Exit Meldorf. Drive west to Quarnbek. The canal ferry 'Landwehr' takes you free of charge over to the other side. After ca. 200 metres you will reach the canal bank.

Palace Salzau
The former 13th-century knight's castle, situated at the Selenter Lake, rebuilt in 1881 it is open to the public. A picnic at the stately park under imposing old trees - seeing the lovely white castle - it feels like emperor's times.

Direction: Take the B 202 from Kiel to Lütjenburg and leave the road in Wittenberger Passau, direction Fargau. Follow the signposts 'Landeskulturzentrum'.
