Animal biodiversity and botanical treasures

In the Zoo Rostock, you go on an expedition through the animal kingdom and meet 4.500 animals of 320 different species from all over the world. the animal diversity ranges from small meerkats to large polar bears.

On your foray over five continents you can watch climbing orangutans, the social cohabiting of Humboldt penguins, pygmy hippopotamus swimming and diving or stately lions and athletic cheetahs foraging through their terrain. The species-appropriate facilities are imbedded into an extensive park landscape and give you the opportunity to experience the zoo inhabitants in a natural habitat.

Apart from the animals, numerous botanic treasures await you at the Zoo Rostock. A symphony of colours in the dahlia quarter, magical flower blossoming in the protected rhododendron copse, exotic plants in the Darwineum and the impressive oak avenue – let yourself be enchanted by the zoo's green side.

The adventure evolution in the Darwineum

In the Darwineum, you experience the origin of life close up. In three interactive exhibition areas, the great world of nature experience is dedicated to the theme evolution in a very special way. In different theme berths, Europe's biggest jellyfish round, a colourful coral reef, living fossils and lots more. You will travel 3,5 billion years through time and learn how life developed on earth.

The heart of the living museum beats in the 4.500 square metres large tropical hall. Here you dive into the world of the apes. Gorillas and orangutans live in the Darwineum in a peaceful society with De Brazza's monkeys, lar gibbons, sloths and zebra finches. Via raised stands, suspension bridges and meandering paths you get very close to the animals in Rostock's jungle, closer than it is usually possible in nature.
