Roland Fountain

The basin of the octagonal Stock-fountain from the Renaissance consists of eight sandstone slabs. Six of those carry reliefs with depictions of deeds done by the Twelve good Heroes, the other two emblem tablets.

The crowned figure in the fountain's centre was and still is being seen as the embodiment of Roland but it depicts a town vassal armed with lance and buckler only. All the same the description 'market fountain', used by the city Hildesheim in its Internet presentation wasn't able to prevail.

A first fountain was constructed on the marketplace in Hildesheim's old town in 1540. The original of today's fountain stems from 1548. It was reproduced 1986.
