Zwickau's most famous son Robert Schumann was born on 8th June 1810 at Hauptmarkt 5 / corner Münzstraße. This house goes back to the year 1450 but had to be demolished in 1955 due to dilapidation.

In honour of the 100th anniversary of Robert Schumann's death in the year 1956 a new building was constructed, the exterior true to the original, while the interior caters for the new tasks of a museum. The museum as an independent national monument opened on the 22nd of July and has housed since then the worldwide important Schumann archive, a museum's tract with valuable portraits, pictures and original instruments as well as a chamber music hall with 180 seats.
