Residenzschloß Darmstadt

In the centre of today's city-centre at the upper end of the Rheinstraße is the  Darmstädter Palace situated. It wasn't always like that: Earlier, at the times of Georg I, the palace safeguarded Darmstadt's west side. The moat served as defence. In the southwest of the palace stand the new gate, which was used mostly by farmers from Darmstadt's hinterland.

But only two wings of the complex were done one at the side of the Rheinstraße and one towards the market place. The palace burnt down to its outer walls in 1944. The outer status of the pre-war time could virtually be restored.
The Schloßmuseum founded in 1924 is situated in the older part of the palace. Its 22 rooms offer a good overview of over 250 years of courtly life in a small residence and the history of the former landgrave shire and the later grand duchy Hesse.
