Oberlausitz Heath and Lake Landscape

In Saxony's north-east begins on of Germany's largest pond areas - the Oberlausitz Heath and Lake Landscape. Expansive wooded areas and more than thousand ponds form
Germany's largest inter-connected lake area. Thanks to these diverse habitats one can watch animals and plant who have since long vanished at other places. Around 150 breeding birds among others also cranes and white-tailed eagles are at home at the lakes.
Numerous hiking and cycling paths - mostly over flat land - turn this area into an ideal holiday destination.
Hunting and riding enthusiasts
as well anglers will find in these lake landscape terrific possibilities to enjoy their hobbies.
Apart from the lovely countryside, preserved historical villages with former mansions and manors, little palaces and parks give insight into the culture and life of the people from the Oberlausitz. Many villages arose from Slav settlements. The Slav people, the Lausitz' Sorbs, kept or renewed their language and national peculiarities until today. Nature markets with regional products and fishing festivals are part of this is.
