The castle Haus zum Haus was constructed around the year 1276, when the town privilege was bestowed upon Ratingen. A Wallburg from Frankish times was situated here before. This was completely destroyed by fire in the 12th-century.

The fortified moated castle was extended several times. Johann zum Haus was marshal of the duchy Berg in the 15th century. He redesigned and enlarged the castle. Later in the 17th-century it was again extended.

After the last representative of the people "Zum Haus" had died the castle fell into foreign hands. Finally the earls of Spee bought the castle. It remained in the possession of the earls von Spee for about 200 years. During this time the castle became more and more derelict. Finally in 1972 the then owner gifted the castle to the town Ratingen. The architect Bruno Lambart took over the "Haus zum Haus" in the following year and lovingly restored it to its present beauty.

Today the castle houses a restaurant. Here you can dine in a historical ambiance. And the surrounding area - the nearby recreation area Anger Valley - is ideal to enjoy the charm of nature.
