Lange Straße in Hoyerswerda (Sorbian: Wojerecy)

The Lange Straße, situated in the old town of Hoyerswerda is a listed craftsmen alley with mostly single-storey houses. With a length of 250 metres it really was once Hoyerswerda's longest street. At its narrowest point the street is only three and a half metres and follows the course of two Elster branches (outer and inner trench).
In the 18th century trade and crafts blossomed in Hoyerswerda. Many of crafts people lived at that time in the newly built houses at the "Langen Straße" and also had their workshops there.
At the "Langen Strasse 1" is today the shoemaker's workshop museum, which testifies the long tradition of this craft. The present residents and crafts people of the alley take great care of their lovingly restored facades. Many city guests walk over the historical natural cobblestones, which has granite flagstones in the centre of the road to preserve the impression of life in the former city farmer houses. 15 of the 42 houses have been included in the lists of cultural monuments. In summer the historical old town of Hoyerswerda is being decorated with flower boxes and ideal for a little stroll.
