Krefelder Town Hall

The building, which was soon named the 'Stadtschloss', was purchased by the town Krefeld in 1860 and has been used as a town hall since then. During the war it was in parts destroyed but rebuilt to its original form and a south wing added. Today a considerable part of the municipal administration is still housed here.

The Von-der-Leyen-Platz is named after the constructor of the present Krefelder town hall; It was built from 1791 to 1794 in Rhenish neo-classical style for Conrad von der Leyen, who belonged to the famous Krefelder 'Silk Barons'. The family von der Leyen owned the Prussian monopoly for silk processing in Krefeld in the 18th-century.
