Town history

Along the Roman Rheintalstraße the castle and the town of Uerdingen at the far towards west reaching Rhine loop, mark the start of the old connection towards the west via Bockum to Krefeld. The settlement, based on Frankish origin, was initially located more easterly, and had to be relocated further to the West due to a flooding catastrophe in 1275. The present city plan developed in and around 1275.

Uerdingen was a place of trade and artwork. The exceptional location of Uerdingen on the Rhine was also the reason that Uerdingen developed to a forwarding and shipping city. Krefeld-Uerdingen - yesterday and today

The North of Uerdingen is marked by the territory of the former factory of Bayer. In 1877 Edmund ter Meer founded his factory named Dr. E. ter Meer & Cie for the production of tar colour, which later developed to the Bayer factory.
The chemical factories of the Bayer AG produced plastics, colour pigments and chemical primary products. At the end of the 90th part of the Bayer factory were spun off and sold. The Chempark Krefeld-Uerdingen emerged with a variety of companies on the former terrain of the Bayer factory.

"The waggon factory Uerdingen founded in1898 in Uerdingen produced a.o. the legendary railcar of Uerdingen. Today this factory belongs to the Siemens AG and to the most modern production places for rail vehicles in Europe. Here exclusively passenger trains are being manufactured.
