Kinderhaus is, together with the districts Coerde and Sprakel, to the municipal North. With its circa 16.000 citizens, Kinderhaus serves mainly as a place of residence, even though some service providers and companies have settled here. Kinderhaus was founded around 1333 and its location was then far away from Münster's gates. The name derives from one of the homes of the lepers, which was called the 'kinderen hus'. Apart from this home, there was only one church and a few farms in Kinderhaus at the beginning of the 19th-century.

In the year 1903, Kinderhaus was incorporated into Münster and has seen since then a continuous growth. At first, the settlement grew along the B 219, before in the mid-1970ties, a densely populated housing estate with living complexes up to twelve floors was built in Brüningheide. In 1984, the main centre of Kinderhaus was created around the Idenbrockplatz. Since then, diverse shops, the library, a public indoor swimming pool and the district administration have settled here.

Currently the development of Kinderhaus runs from the south in the direction of Münster's city centre. Recently, in southwestern direction another residential estate with an easy residential construction plan came into being. In southeastern direction, in the Uppenberg-quarter diverse service provider settled here.
