Keulenberg

A popular destination in the district Kamenz is the Keulenberg. It is with 413,4 metres the highest mountain in the Westlausitz. It can be reached by car but also foot via well sign-posted hiking paths. For example, the peak of the Oberlichtenau can be 'scaled' in good 50 minutes with a leisurely walk through unique nature. Along the way stone walls in the middle of the forest bear witness to forestal herding area, an early practised form of keeping cattle. The peak is graced with three rocky cliffs of Zweiglimmergranodiorit ( a special kind of granite). One of the cliffs carries an iron observation tower. From there visitors have in good weather a great view over Dresden, over the Königsbrücker Heather and the Pulsnitz Valley.
The former hunting lodge, which Countess Friedericke Sophia von Holtzendorff had constructed on the mountain in 1733, has unfortunately become a ruin since a strong storm in December 1833. Open to the public are again the obelisk (Friedrich-August-Pillar) and the Bismarck monument. By the way, the mountain is an insiders' tip among astronomy friends because of its minimal light pollution. The Keulenberg can be found easily. The pole with the antennas of the commercial HF-converter can be seen from afar. As we learned from the newspaper, the restaurant will be open again from July 2006.
