House of Technique
The Haus der Technik (House of Technique) short HDT, is a further education facility in Essen. It is situated near the main railway station and is housed in the old exchange building.
The founding of the HDT goes back to the year 1909. At a meeting of the Rheinisch-Westfälischen Gesellschaft for exact science Heinrich Reisner pointed out that further education for engineers is a necessity. In 1912 the association in Essen decided to found a further education facility for this reason. On the 21st of November 1927 the HDT was opened at the exchange building in Essen. Then on the 9th of January 1930 the same-named club was founded.
In the 2nd World War on the 5th of March 1943 the HDT was completely destroyed during a bombing-raid. The library and the patent document office were also destroyed at the same raid. After the war even before the building was rebuilt, the first lecture took place on the 24th of April 1946. In the same year the RWTH Aachen furnished a branch here. The actual rebuilding took place between 1951 and 1953.

Today the HDT works with over 5.000 consultants from colleges, industry, ministries, economy and associations. Key aspects are installation, electro, energy, vehicle, manufacturing, building, medical and processing engineering as well as civil engineering, business economics, chemistry, EDV, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutics, quality control, radiation protection, environment and material science.
