“Holiday Landscape of Timber Framed Houses”

The Upper Lusatian timber framed houses are century-old evidence of a traditional building style which represents a combination between half-timbering and log construction unique in Germany.

The “timber-frame” is a supporting construction of vertical and horizontal wooden beams entirely or partially surrounding or “framing” the ground floor of the house. The roof of the house or the upper floor designed as half-timbering rests on the timber frame. The wooden log room of the ground floor, which is an independent constructional body within the house, is behind the supporting construction. Profiled columns, artistically decorated window borderings, richly adorned stone door frames, wrought-iron bars and expensive slate claddings are evidence of industriousness and solid workmanship. Upper Lusatian timber framed houses belong to the important traditional building styles of the world.

Therefore Obercunnersdorf is the monumental place in the Upper Lusatia. The “Häusls”, as the Upper Lusatian people lovingly call their timber framed houses, are densely packed on either side of the village street.
Timber framed houses with flowery front gardens can be found throughout the mountainous Upper Lusatian region – particularly beautiful ensembles adorn Walterdorf (with numerous splendid door frames of local sandstone), Großschönau, Jondorf, Spitzkunnersdorf, Eibau and Niederoderwitz.

These “Häusls” fostered with much love are clear evidence of village way of living, for they weren’t only accommodation in earlier days but also the home of traditional Upper Lusatian hand-loom weaving. Holidays in a cosy timber framed house give an impression of the Upper Lusatian way of living and offer recreation and relaxation from everyday stress.
