Museum for oceanography and fishing - aquarium

It is hard to believe but this special museum is the only one in Central Europe and is known well beyond its country's borders. It attracts over half a million guests every like a magnet. This makes it the most visited museum in North Germany. Two masts show the way. An original fish cutter from Saßnitz hides behind them - an appropriate setting for the museum.

The building itself was a former early-gothic Catherine nunnery. The hall church was completely reconstructed after 1970. It was restored and was converted into the exhibition hall of the 3 story museum. The construction stands freely in the room.

The sea aquarium in which over 1000 sea creatures splash about, is fascinating for every visitor.

In the large tank there are even sharks swimming about and sea turtles, seahorses, lionfishes and moray eels are all favourites among visitors. The biggest exhibit is the 16m long skeleton of a finback whale, which was found beached in Rügen in 1825. The heaviest exhibit is the leatherback turtle, which was caught in Stralsund in 1965 and weighed 450 kilograms.
