One of the most important artists of modernity, the sculptor, graphic designer and writer Ernst Barlach ( 1870-1938 ), lived in Güstrow from 1910 to 1938.
The biggest part of his work was created here in this town.
Since Barlach's death, Güstrow has maintained the most extensive collection of his work, in addition, also important life documents. The unique and important work complex of Barlach's estate, became after Germasny'S reunification, starting point for the founding of the Ernst Barlach Foundation Güstrow.

Another important part of Ernst Barlach's work is situated in the Gertruden Chapel, at the Gertrudenplatz 1, near the Güstrow's town centre.
