Amidst the Bourtanger Moor

A central attraction in the Bourtanger Moor is the Emsland Moor Museum in Geeste. The moor was with 1.200 km² once Europe's largest inter-connected raised bog. The museum, situated in the Dutch-German borderland, proves on the basis of vivid witnesses the development, the characteristic and the economical usage of this unique natural landscape.
The Moor Museum has an over 30 ha large outdoor area with a re-naturated raised bog area, which can be visited on foot or with the help a light railway (track length 3,4 km). The outside area also shows off a steam plough set from the Firm Ottomeyer, whose immense size and power caused a sensation far beyond the Emsland and is second to none as a technical-historical monument.

History excitingly told

In April 2006 the newly built exhibition hall invites you to a time travel into past living and working worlds. The exhibition, which is also 'readable' for our Dutch guests, informs about the highly specialised moor habitat. On the basis of preserved peat exploitation and processing machines the toilsome work in the bog but also the constant technical progress is being documented. The exhibition hall houses a small cinema with a selection of historical films. We are happy to send you our extensive group programme. Please feel free to contact us! All programmes are available in Dutch, English and the Low German language. Emsland Touristic as well as the local tourism offices are happy to help you with accommodation and your holiday planning in the region.
Please also note our yearly programme, which is available at the cashier or Internet.

Most of all for children

In the year 1999 a settlement place from the 1030ties was created on the museum's area. It houses old domestic animal breeds from the region and is most of all the first attraction for children when visiting the museum. Domestic animals, threatened with extinction like the Bentheimer sheep and pigs have found a home here. The seal of quality was awarded to the settlement site 'Arche-Hof' and gives insights into the privation of everyday life, a life that was marked by manual labour.
Today the first settlers' motto - 'The first death, the second misery, the third bread' - has been kept.
