The Deutsche Theater was already opened in 1883 and is the pinnacle of production and dramatic art of international standing. Great successes were celebrated from 1905 onwards under Max Reinhardt. He made the theatre international famous with his groundbreaking productions of antique dramas, Shakespeare-productions and staging of contemporary authors. Max Reinhardt managed the Deutsche Theater until his emigration in 1933. The theatre survived the Nazi dictation with a toned-down, classic-humanistic programme.

Many emigrated artist returned after the war to the Deutsche Theater. It was reopened in 1945 with "Nathan the Wise" under the director Wolfgang Langhoff. The Deutsche Theater is considered as a place of dramatic art and belligerence. Unforgettable are the productions by Benno Besson, Alexander Lang and Heiner Müller. And not for nothing, it was the actors of the Deutsche Theaters who organised the determine demonstration on the 4th of November 1989 at the Berlin Alexanderplatz.
The Deutsche Theater earned the award German-speaking "Theatre of the Year" twice in the last years under the present intendant and director Thomas Langhoff.
