Deutsches Segelflugmuseum (German Glider Museum)

The German Glider Museum is situated where the gliding once started: on the Wasserkuppe, with 950m the highest elevation of the High Rhön.

Enthusiastic old glider pilots, among them still some pioneers from the twenties founded the museum. Thanks to their collection alacrity the hall soon burst at the seams where the historical glider, glider models, photos, wall charts, documents and souvenirs were on show. After long efforts with the support of the state Hesse, the district Fulda and the town Gersfeld as well as a generous donation by German Lufthansa, a new building was created on the traditional terrain.

The new Glider Museum with 1500sqm exhibition area was opened on the 31.08.87. The round building of 37m in diameter in a self-supporting wooden building style is well worth seeing just for i's architecture alone. But it has become way to small for the further scheduled collected 'milestones of gliding' and has to be extended urgently yet again. We hope that the application for an extension will be approved.
