The community Elsterheide emerged on 01.07.1995 from the once independent villages Neuwiese-Bergen, Sabrodt, Nardt, Klein Partwitz, Seidewinkel, Tätzschwitz, Bluno and Geierswalde. The community area, situated in the north of the district Bautzen encompasses an surface of ca. 130 km². 3.900 citizens live right now in the eight rural villages.

Generous green areas as well as preserved historical four-sided courtyards shape the appearance in the villages of the Elsterheide. Museum-like facilities and events make the Sorbian culture come alive. Large parts of the community area, where until the beginning of the 90s brown coal was won are now being redeveloped in the course of fit for the future. Europe's largest man-made Lakeland will be created with in parts inter-connected navigable water surfaces of over 14000 ha. Through conceptual planning and lots of private engagement preparations are being created for the tourist usage, which could be seen in future as an additional economical main pillar.

Inter-regional tourist cycle trails like the 'Fürst-Pückler-Cycle-Path', the 'Froschrad-Trail', the 'Niederlausitzer Bergbautour', the 'our Brandenburg' and the 'Schwarze- Elster- Cycle-Trail' can already be reached via the regional cycle paths of the community Elsterheide.
