Elstra (Sorbian Halštrow) is being named in 1338 as church place in a certificate from the monastery Marienstern
The baroque church was three times destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt in 1726.
The church is well worth seeing especially for its uniquely pretty baptismal font kept in strong baroque, a present from Charlotte Tugendreich Countess von Holtzendorf and the remarkable pulpit.
The altar was created in 1732-33 by Andreas Böhme. The paintings stem from the Dresden court painter L.W.E. Dietrich. The organ was finished in   1755 by Abraham Strochbach. Choir concerts among others take place at this church, which was extensively restored from 1987 to 1993.
