Castle Stein

A visit to the town of Hartenstein without an extensive tour of Castle Stein is unimaginable.
Castle Stein is situated in the village of Stein, which was suburbanised in 1934, near the train station of Hartenstein.

Situated on a freestanding rock formation Castle stein is considered as one of the prettiest and oldest castles of the Mulde valley. It is not one of the largest Saxon buildings but especially the upper castle, still stemming from Romanesque times, brings to the visitor's mind the rough medieval customs. It was protected by a moat and double walls. Inside was a guard's walkway.

From the lower castle, which stems from the 14th to 16th century, the essential and part of the west wing were preserved. If you want to know more about life in the olden times, take a guided tour through the well preserved castle museum.

Thanks to the great engagement of Prince von Schönburg-Hartenstein a lot of restoration work has been carried out in recent years.
The Schönburger were for more than half a millennium in Hartenstein. Reason enough for Dr. Alfred Prince von Schönburg-Hartenstein to buy the grandfatherly estate back in the year 1996 from the town of Hartenstein.
