Situated one and a half kilometres north of the original settlement at the bog strip between geest and marsh it was, in its time the first German city, which was built according to plan around a central dock. Thereby becoming the most modern harbour founding on German ground. Within the framework of the Hanseatic long-distance transport the city made a comfortable Elbe crossing possible and developed into a lively Hanseatic city.
