Biosphere Reserve Spreewald

100 km southeast of Berlin is landscape situated, which is unique in Europe - the Spreewald (forest). Year after year, numerous tourists visit Brandenburg's most famous travel destination. And experience, that the Spreewald is more than boat rides, cucumbers and gastronomy. Because, here those seeking relaxation can still find calm and solitude.

The Spreewald is a landscape, which has no equal. Here, due to the last Ice Age, the river Spree separated into a fine sectioned net of flows. A big inland delta was created.

This unique cultural landscape was declared a biosphere Reserve in 1990, which received recognition by the UNESCO in March 1991. Here many plant and animal species who live here have been extinct or are endangered in other places.


The Biosphere Reserve Spreewald stretches northwest from Cottbus to a length of 55 km and a width of maximal 15 km and touches the three communities Dahme-Spreewald, Oberspreewald-Lausitz and Spree-Neiße.
