The period of promoterism of the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum (1897) focusses on applied art. Contemporary painting and statuary art have won importance in the 1920ties.

The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum will be closed due to renovation work until the end of 2014.

In the post-war period these two tendencies are being forced by two incidents:

1) 1955 Dr.Ulrich Lange provided the museum as an additional exhibition institute for contemporary art with an architectural jewel - the villa of his father Hermann Lange, which was designed in the Bauhaus style by the star architect Mies van der Rohe in 1927/28.

Since 1981 the neighbouring house Esters, also designed by von Mies is being used as an annex by the art museums Krefeld for international respected changing exhibitions.

2) In 1968 the manufacturer Walther Lauffs contacted the museum with an offer to build up a collection of current art, making it then available on permanent loan. Hand in Hand with the museum's purchases a worldwide renowned collection is growing in a short time.
