In Berlin she did a training to become an infant nurse later she worked in Königsberg for different newspapers. Her first poem was published in 1896. From 1901 onwards volumes with poems, ballads and narratives were published by different publishers. Her work was strongly influenced by her East-Prussian homeland and her Christian faith. Her initial enthusiasm for the National Socialism was later criticised and is still being publicly discussed today. After fleeing from Königsberg she reached via stops in Copenhagen and refugee camp Oxböl finally Apelern. There she was taken in by friends, the Münchhausen family. In 1948 she moved to Bad Nenndorf. She lived there in the house built for her in 1953 together with her housekeeper Elise Schmidt and her acquaintance Heimgart von Hingst until her death in 1964. After the war Agnes Miegel became an identification figure for her former compatriots. In those circles she was called 'Mother East Prussia'.
