The district has shares at the "Hohenloher Ebene", at the heights of the  "Schwäbisch-Fränkischen Waldberge" as well as parts of the "Frankenhöhe". The Neckar's two right tributaries namely the Jagst and Kocher meander through the district.

History:

The often discussed administrative district reform from the 1. January 1973 created then the new administrative district Schwäbisch Hall from the former districts Schwäbisch Hall and Crailsheim as well as parts from the former district Backnang.
